Return of the PGA

The PGA Tour is hardly a stranger to Silverado Resort and Spa. Over the years, Silverado has played host to an array of tournaments including the 1968-1976 Kaiser International Open, the 1977-1980 Anheuser-Busch Classic, and the 1989-2002 Senior PGA “the Transamerica” event. Some celebrities to have graced the Robert Trent-Jones designed course include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, and of course Silverado’s Johnny Miller.

Besides being at the edge of our seats since word of the PGA’s return surfaced, we’re also eager to show off Johnny Miller’s renovation of the North Course, of which the PGA has yet to experience. Stretching out over a vast 360 acres, the North Course is said by Johnny Miller to be “amongst the most challenging and beautiful courses in the state”.

One impressive major detail of the Fry’s.com Open is it’s sizable and charitable donation record. In each of the past two years, the tournament has accumulated 1,000,000 dollars to be donated to worthy charities; 5,000,000 in the recent past. Yeah…wow.

Even more excited than Napa Valley dwellers are the amateur golfers, who will be matched with pros for an ostensibly unforgettable week of rounds. The excitement (though already commenced) will take launch with a Pre-Qualifier and Qualifier in the preceding week of the tournament.

Our advice to the players? Relax, relish the alluring scenery of Napa Valley, and play your heart out in the name of philanthropy. And if that doesn’t work, take the advice of 55-time PGA Tour winner, Arnold Palmer: “I have a tip that will take five strokes off anyone’s golf game. It’s called an eraser.”
